The UN Open Source Principles

The European Open Source Academy will support the UN framework for the use, development, and sharing of Open Source software amongst the European open source community.

From technical developments to strengthening a supportive open source network, we highlight some of their open source principles:

  1. Open by default : Making Open Source as the standard for projects.

  2. Contribute back : Encourage active participation in the Open Source Ecosystem.

  3. RISE ( recognise, incentivise, support and empower): Empowering individuals and communities to actively participate.

Why is European Open Source Academy endorsing the UN Open Source Principles?

This year's Advocacy & Awareness Award Recipient, Lydia Pincher, reflected on the importance of supporting the UN's initiative on establishing a primary framework of open source development.

As the Head of Advocacy & Awareness of the European Open Source Academy, Lydia coordinates the Academy’s activities related to the overall promotion and raising of awareness of the strategic policy value of open source for Europe.

"The UN Open Source Principles are very welcoming and align with open source practice. They provide a showcase and inspiration, not just for the UN ecosystem but also for the broader society to follow. They signal the importance of open source and how organisations need to act to benefit while also supporting open source sustainability."
Lydia Pincher, Member and Head of Advocacy & Awareness of the European Open Source Academy
